J&D's Bacon PopcornJ&D's Bacon Popcorn

It's been a while since I posted anything now - between going on holiday and having been a bit ill, I basically haven't had the time to cook/take pics/write lately. That will all change soon (with the Bacon Guacamole recipe I mentioned on Twitter, which was sent to me by one of my visitors - but more on that later); until then, here's a quick review of some Bacon Popcorn I found in TK Maxx (of all places!) a short while back. They're made by J&D, whose other creations include the infamous Baconnaise and Bacon Salt (I still haven't had the pleasure to try either, but will definitely order some in and review them, too, later on).

The first thing I'd like to mention is that I love their packaging; both the box and the bags have a sort of old-time look to them, which can be described by no word other than awesome. With that out of the way, I suppose I should say something about the actual popcorn as well. A few seconds after you put the bag in the microwave there's a lovely bacony smell (despite their complete lack of actual bacon - it's a vegetarian product), accompanied by the feel-goody sound of the corn popping and trying to break free of the paper bag - so far, so good, in other words. In terms of taste, they aren't quite as bacony as I would have expected - don't get me wrong, there is definitely bacon there, and it's good, it's just rather more subtle than the smell had led me to expect.

J&D's Popcorn Box

At first I wasn't sure whether this subtleness was good or bad - being a true bacoholic I'd normally say more is better - but having munched my way through 2 bags I don't actually think they need more flavour. At the moment they're bacon flavoured popcorn, whereas should they be more bacony they may just become popcorn-textured bacon (which would clearly be delicious, but a different product altogether). They're basically a meatier and much tastier version of standard salted popcorn, and I reckon they could make a killing if they were available as an alternative in cinemas. Overall I'd give them 5 out of 10 for satisfying bacon cravings, but a solid 9 out of 10 as a quick and delicious snack.

I'll be making my own bacon popcorn in the near future as well - using actual bacon fat and pieces of proper crispy bacon - and perhaps do a little taste duel between J&D's and the real deal. Stay tuned.

Ahh I see. A spice grinder certainly does sound like the easier way to go around it - unfortunately I don't have one. :( The pepper sounds like a good addition. Have you tried it yet? Was it yummy? :)

A spice grinder maybe not be the best idea after all. The misses certainly wasn't happy when I told what I used it for :P

I tried it two days ago with some pasta - very simple, since I actually couldn't bother cooking a real meal. But the outcome was very good actually. Next time i might make a little smaller portion and cut a little down on the salt.

It gives a real nice bacony taste, without really going all in, so definetly something I'll be making again in the future. There's a couple of pictures on my blog too, if you care to look :)

Bacon in the oven, dry it on paper when crispy. Then I put it in a bamix spice-grinder and added salt and pepper when it was part pure, part small chunks and grinded it all some more. And voila :)

Nice :) I've actually been thinking about doing that myself as well. How did you go about it? I was thinking you could just fry up some proper crispy bacon then grind it in a pestle and mortar, or whizz it in a blender possibly.

Inspired by this I decided to make homemade bacon salt. Guess they'll fit perfectly with popcorn. I'll let you know how that turns out
