Bacon Cone - It's Finally Here!

Update: Had nothing to do, so decided to play with photoshop for a bit. The result is the image above, how d'ya like it?

This is a little project that I've been mulling over for quite some time now. I figured a bacon cone would be delicious not only for savoury purposes - such as the one above, which I filled with scrambled eggs and fried mushrooms - but would make an ideal comrade for sweeter fillings as well. Imagine, if you will, a bacon cone filled with maple ice cream, or marshmallows dipped in melted chocolate, if you don't think that sounds delicious you're a) wrong and b) reading the wrong blog. I'm sure you will all agree that the possibilities are literally endless and the long rule of waffle cones has finally come to an end.

Anyway, I've been trying to figure out how to actually go about making a bacon cone for some time now, and the other day I happened to come across the solution. All you need to do is sort of weave together a bunch of bacon rashers, then wrap them around a cone-shaped object (I used a rolled up pizza mesh, which I got from amazon) and bake in the oven, Simples. I'm very pleased indeed to announce that this, my very first attempt at a bacon cone, didn't end up as another failed project - much to my amazement, it worked! Since I made it around lunch time, however, I didn't fancy filling it with anything sweet - the fact that the core of my lunch consisted of 12 rashers of bacon felt unhealthy enough, so I decided to fill it with scrambled eggs and fries mushrooms, as I mentioned above.
If you fancy making one of these yourself, here's how I went about it.

You Will Need

  • 12 Rashers of Streaky Bacon
  • 1 Pizza Mesh
  • 1 Kebab Skewer
  • 1 Sheet of Greaseproof Paper
  • A filling of your choice

Method

1) First of all, preheat your oven to 200c.

2) Now, grab your pizza mesh and roll it into a cone shape, and weave your kebab skewer into it to keep it rolled up.

3) This is where you have a chance to be smarter than I was, and grab some greaseproof paper to put under your bacon. As you may have noticed I'm weaving my bacon straight on a chopping board in one of the pics above - bad idea, as it proved impossible to transfer it onto my cone. So, grab some greaseproof and wave on that; if you don't know how, just think every other over every other under and you're there.

4) Put the cone diagonally across the bacon and ensure that there's enough bacon in the bottom corner to fold over the corner of the cone - see the 3rd picture above.

5) Fold one side of the bacon weave over the cone, then carefully remove the greaseproof (the bacon may stick to it slightly, so don't just rip it off) and repeat with the other side.

6) Transfer the roll onto a baking tray and place in the middle of the oven for about 35-50 minutes, turning a couple of times to ensure that the cone cooks evenly. The time may vary between ovens, and mine isn't the best in the world, so do keep an eye on the cone as it cooks.

The idea of using a pizza mesh came from the Big Buttz blog, so check out his cone as well.

I was thinking the same thing, about being savory/sweet- I was thinking of using bacon ice cream with peanut butter bacon brittle, caramel, and fudge layers. Maybe some bacon bits sprinkled on top. I am skinny, somehow.

That sounds delicious! To be honest, though, I'm not sure whether you would actually need the extra bacon in the ice cream etc. The cone itself requires a fair bit of bacon, so I reckon you may be better off using some other interesting flavour that would compliment the cone.. Just my 5c, though! :) I'd love to hear how you get on with and find it all should you try it.

I've wanted to make one of these for months now, but was never sure if it would actually hold together. Thank you for creating the blueprint on something I thought I created myself, you bastard. No really, thank you.

Madness! Or maybe genius. When an idea is first thought often no-one can distinguish between the two... But then we've come to expect nothing less than imaginative thinking from the bacon man.

Your post Is so interesting, it's a refreshing and new way of using bacon. And filling it with sweet or savoury sounds delicious. You could incorporate the American breakfast of maple, bacon and pancakes also.

Thank you Selina! Really glad to hear that some appreciates what I'm doing. :-) An American breakfast cone sounds like a great idea! It has been added to my list of things to try.
